Watchdog Physiological Monitoring

Foster-Miller’s Watchdog™ physiological monitoring tool is a comfortable, garment-based system for highly active applications. It monitors heart rate, respiration rate, posture, activity, skin temperature and GPS location, and transmits the data wirelessly to a remote display. Up to 125 users can be monitored simultaneously and their data saved for later analysis.

The physiological monitoring system can integrate or accept inputs from other sensors for more complex health analyses, biomechanics and other applications. The core technology of the system is Foster-Miller’s LiveWired™ electronic-textile network platform, which is embedded into a comfortable garment designed to be worn as a base layer under body armor (for soldiers) and other protective gear (for first responders, athletes, etc.). The garment, with its electronics module detached, is machine washable. The rugged electronics module houses the data processing electronics, radio transceiver and rechargeable battery, and includes a waterproof housing. A remote display receives processed and filtered information from the system indicating the physiological status of the individual wearer to assist the decision-making of a coach, trainer, medic or commander.

The physiological monitoring system has been validated by an outside university laboratory to show excellent correlation to laboratory standard methods while the user is exercising.

The Watchdog™ physiological monitor is in pilot production for several customers, including the US military, first responders, and sports teams. The current version incorporates the individual wearer’s vital signs into physiologic algorithms to transmit Red Light (significant health or performance perturbation), Yellow Light (modest perturbation) or Green Light (normal) to the remote display. In parallel, Foster-Miller is developing algorithm upgrades to provide more detailed condition indications such as heat stress and other health status information, fitness level and individual training prescriptions . The system includes web applications to display and analyze this data if desired.

Watchdog™ Tactical has been tested by several military and first responder units to assess the condition of users in training and operational environments.

The sports model is being evaluated by beta users for use by coaches and trainers in team sports and personal fitness and strength training.
