Foster-Miller, Inc., announced today that Electronic Design magazine has chosen the TALON®/SWORDS robotic platform as its “Military Design of the Year.”

"My summer visit to Picatinny Arsenal gave me a chance to see design in progress for the latest electronics being readied for our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Electronic Design Editor-in-Chief Mark David wrote in the December issue. “Given the significance of the Iraq war in 2006, it was interesting to get a look at the electronics our troops rely on in the field.”

TALON robots have been used in Iraq to disable roadside bombs and unexploded ordnance since 2003.  They have also been used for ordnance-related missions in Bosnia and Afghanistan.  Foster-Miller and Picatinny Arsenal have been developing a version of the robot with a gun mounted on it – currently called SWORDS – for the past few years.  Last June, the U.S. Army approved the SWORDS robot for use in armed reconnaissance.

“We are honored to have our TALON robot recognized for its outstanding design features by Electronic Design magazine,” said Dr. William Ribich, President and CEO of Foster-Miller.  “This honor is in line with TALON’s reputation as the robot of choice for more and more personnel who use robots for dangerous assignments on the battlefield.”

Foster-Miller, Inc. is an engineering, manufacturing and technology development firm principally located in suburban Boston, MA on Rte. 95, “America’s Technology Highway.”  It is certified to Aerospace Quality Management Standard AS9100 and has SW-CMM Level 3 software certification from the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.   Foster-Miller was founded in 1956 by three graduates of MIT who believed there was a need for a company that could solve clients’ difficult technical problems through first-class analysis and design. In November 2004, it became an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of QinetiQ North America (QNA).
